A Learning Remote That Actually Learns! September 9, 2010 D. Cloud (Grand Haven, MI United States) I'd been on the fence for a while about getting one of these, but with the price (and the fact it's a Sony brand) I decided to purchase it. Set up was a breeze thanks to the hefty user manual. You can also go to the Sony web site for a walkthrough. The learning feature is great. I had it learn both my Sony DVD player and my old Emerson VCR, straight from the remotes. I was unsure if the thing would work for my 57" Hitachi projection screen TV. The thing is over thirty years old and it never had a remote. A small booklet of codes comes with the RM-VL600, but none of the ones for Hitachi TVs worked. Thankfully I found more codes on the Sony web site and one of them got the TV to work. I was extremely happy.
After I'd programmed the remote to work with my DVD player I noticed whenever I hit the left and right directional arrows (which I'd "learned" from my DVD remote) that it would skip around really fast and I couldn't get it to stop on one item at a time. I was thinking about returning it when I discovered the "erase" feature in the manual. With this procedure I was able to erase the learned function for those two buttons and then re-learn it again. After that it worked perfectly. So if you run into a similar issue remember the 'erase' feature.
I wanted the black version with the blue buttons, but that was no big deal. I mean, seriously, who cares about colors when the thing does what it's suppose to, eh? I can highly recommend the RM-VL600 to anyone looking for a universal remote.
Seadog September 8, 2010 Rodney A. Hignite (Lovettsville, VA USA) Love the remote - particularly for the programming feature from the original remote - use only one remote - and store the original away without the batteries - there are certain devices that need the original remote for diagnostics or reset functions - so you want to keep them safe.
Have three of them - bought them from Amazon - at $18.xx - must stop referring friends to Amazon to purchase them because now they are $32+
Remote rocks! September 6, 2010 HR (Atlanta, GA) I use the remote to control my Samsung TV, Insignia Amp, Comcast digital box. Had to sit down and program each button separately since it did not find the right sequence for either of the devices. The option to program with the actual device remote is really neat! Loved that feature.
Awesome remote for the price August 31, 2010 M. Moyer (Fort Worth, TX United States) I run a mythtv setup in my house. I originally bought a Windows MCE remote to control it. The MCE remote was inexpensive and worked great, except it didn't have any programmable keys so the TV volume and power couldn't be controlled with it. I ordered this remote for the explicit purpose of copying my existing remote key for key. It works wonderfully for this and has no issues with the MCE remote or receiver. I was amazed that this remote can learn so many keys. Every button on it seems to be programmable...and I haven't even tried using any of the macro functions!
It would be nice if had a few more buttons, but isn't that true of most remotes.
Great Remote (Make sure you are actually getting the RM-VL600) August 30, 2010 minkyboodle (Washington, D.C.) The remote listed here is fabulous. Easy to program, intuitive. I recieved mine from PlusDig and am completely satisfied with the purchase. Item arrived and shipped super quick. I only alluded in the title of this review to make sure that you get this actual model (which has apparently been discontinued). I though I'd get it locally and went to a prominent Big Box retailer and they listed this model number as in stock on their webpage. However, the actual model in the store is this replacement (RMVLZ620) which is a re-design and a lemon in mine and several other amazon reviewer's opinion. Again the actual RM-VL600 is a dream (hence the five stars) and my buying experience has been super. Just make sure another retailer doesn't pull the switch-a-roo on you, just felt obligated to write that. 5 Stars for the listed model and Amazon is great even when dealing through other companies.
